Skype co-founder to visit RP for VoIP conference

Janus Friis, the co-founder of the widely popular voice-over-IP software Skype, will be in the Philippines as one of the speakers at the first Philippine Voice-over-IP Conference (VOIPCON) in Makati City on June 26. The 30-year-old Dane’s topic has yet to be set though the original plan was for him to highlight the benefits of using VoIP as a business tool. An INQ7.NET source said Friis already flew in, albeit quietly, to the Philippines via Cebu early this year, to look into possible business opportunities in the country. The source also said Friis would be back in the Philippines next week to close a deal with a VoIP provider in the Philippines. Skype was created by Friis with Niklas Zennstrom in 2003. The software allows its users to call other Skype users for free and also features five-way voice-conferencing. Pay versions of Skype allow users to make calls from a PC to a traditional landline phone. The application is highly popular among executives in the Philippines who use it
